  • Receiving the Van Allen Award

    In 2008 Dr. Tribble was the recipient of the Van Allen award. The citation reads:

    “For outstanding leadership, research, and scholarship in the emerging field of space environments and effects and their influence on spacecraft design and engineering in the tradition of James Van Allen.”

    The award was presented to Alan by AIAA president Paul Nielsen.

    The James A. Van Allen Space Environments Award is presented by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) to recognize outstanding contributions to space and planetary environment knowledge and interactions as applied to the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics. The award honors the late James A. Van Allen, Regent Distinguished Professor of Physics at The University of Iowa.

Professor Van Allen was an outstanding internationally recognized scientist and pioneer of space exploration who is credited with the discovery of Earth’s “Van Allen Radiation Belts.” Alan had the pleasure of presenting Dr. Van Allen with a plaque commemorating the establishment of the award in 2006.
